We will explore acting skills, character development and language as you learn and practice the elements of comedy. Is there a Hamlet, Juliet, or Puck inside you waiting to shine? No acting experience necessary! Just bring your sense of adventure and step into Shakespeare’s world.
Acting: Time Travel, An Excellent AdventureDevelop your acting skills as you travel through time like Bill and Ted in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
Decide where and when you want to emerge from your time machine and who you want to meet. We can travel to Greece to meet Socrates, Italy to meet Galileo or the wild west to meet General Custer. We’ll kidnap the characters we meet and bring them back to modern times where they will be called upon to tell us about their lives and defend their actions in an improvisational play.
Anatomy and Art through TimeDevelop your artistic skills as you gain a better understanding of human anatomy. You will learn the basic structure of the adult human skeleton, with emphasis on joints and how they move. Then use your knowledge to draw the static forms as well as the skeleton during movement through space and time.. We will also consider changes in the skeletal structure between infancy and adulthood and learn how to depict humans at different stages of life. Finally, we shall consider changes over millennia, from early man (barely upright) to modern forms.
Architecture: Designing Tomorrow’s HomeLearn architectural skills as you design a house for the future.
Where will future houses be built? In the air,on another planet or under ground or underwater? What resources will be available and what technology? The environment will dictate the design.
You will create a variety of designs, and express them through sketches, freehand drafting and models. You will also learn basic architectural drafting standards, model making skills and some rendering methods while designing your own future house. There will be class discussions, small group projects and an individual final project.
Back in Time –An Architectural PerspectiveGain an understanding of history and changes in society through the styles of the American home. We will discover why houses were designed the way they were and learn to identify styles of architecture by their characteristics and differences. How does a turn-of –the –century home look different from a 1960’s home? What is vernacular architecture and why is it important? Through class discussions, small group projects, and an individual design project, you will learn basic architectural drafting standards, and rendering and sketching techniques.
Critical Thinking: The Time MachineFine-tune your critical thinking skills as you examine and discuss questions and concerns that are raised by the short novel "The Time Machine" by H.G.Wells.
This class doesn’t focus on what to think, but on how to approach thinking. Strong critical thinking skills can transform and expand your problem-solving capabilities. Techniques for constructing and deconstructing arguments will be emphasized as the class introduces the rudiments of critical thinking: logical fallacies, causation versus correlation, and basic syllogisms. Philosophical questions that have bedeviled H.G. Wells and the rest of humanity from ancient times to the present will be explored. Practice debates will give you the opportunity to hone your debating and critical thinking skills. You will be mailed a copy of “The Time Machine” to read before camp.
Science Fiction & Fantasy Writing“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…” Science fiction and fantasy often travel into the past or the future, as the opening line from the Star Wars Saga illustrates.
Learn to create a believable alternate world as you let your imagination explore the future, journey to distant planets or visit the halls of your own Hogwart’s Academy. You will learn how to generate exciting ideas and bring them to life with strong characters, vital plots and vivid settings.
Transformation in Figurative ArtExplore the vast differences in artists’depiction of the human form over time. As materials and cultures changed, artists created both paintings and sculptures that rendered their ideal of the human body in diverse ways. We’ll start with some very early sculptural forms, travel through the Cave Period and Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles into the Renaissance and beyond in Western Europe. We’ll also take a brief look at African and some Asian Art that greatly influenced the figurative arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. As you learn about the art of different cultures and times, you will practice your own painting and drawing in the style of the period.
Writing: Historical FictionHistory is full of stories.
Learn how to turn stories from the past into rich, imaginative prose and poetry. Historical fiction needs to be both good writing and good history. Find out how you can combine the two. You will develop your characters, settings and plots with an eye to the past as you practice the basics of good writing, weaving carefully crafted sentences into an engaging story.
Writing and Art: Myth-MakingExplore the earliest forms of story-telling: myths, fairy tales, and fables. Then create your own mythological creature, hero, or villain and write their story. Invent a history and a moral for your myth and learn the process illustrators use to make thumbnail sketches and story-boards. You will finish with a 5-10 page picture book or comic book.
