Activity ClassesAloha Hula
Learn the art of storytelling as you dance the hula. We will practice
with beginning and intermediate hand and foot motions as we learn
ancient traditional moves and end with dancing to a song from the Walt
Disney movie, "Lilo & Stitch."
The Art of Clay and Sculpture
Explore world civilizations through various vessels, from Ancient
Greece to U.S. Civil War face jugs. Learn draping clay techniques to
create realistic animal sculptures, clay masks or Aztec sculptures.
You will also learn basic coil, pinch, slab, and extruded methods of
handbuilding with clay. Assemble a pottery timeline as you work with a
variety of air dry and kiln fired clay.
Build a Time Machine
Build your own Time Machine using personal, found, recycled, and new
materials. We begin by looking at art images related to time, from
sundials and Stonehenge to modern and contemporary works of art like
Salvador Dali’s melting clock. Perhaps your time machines travel to the
past and/or the future. Add personal artifacts such as photos, stories
or personal items that relate to a particular time in your life and
include it on your machine or as part of a time capsule.
Dance Through Time
Explore the various rhythms of popular dances from around the world.
Discover how to move your body in new ways with a Cuban style Rumba,
spirited ChaCha, and maybe even the jivin’ Jive. Learn how the timing
of a Tango differs from the Spanish Macarena. Dance like the stars in
a final, Friday showcase.
Drawing the Body in Motion
How can 3D movement through time and space be represented in 2D art
work. Observe the human body in motion: walking, sprinting, performing
a layup shot, or dancing the hula. Learn how to sketch these figures
and their surroundings. Finally, create dynamic abstract or literal
drawings and paintings that capture the passage of time in space.
Hand Drumming: Music and Time
Enjoy an authentic experience in the music of Ghana. You will explore a
variety of tempos on traditional West African drums and discover how
these tempos might differ from rock and roll drumming or other music
forms. Learn five hand-techniques that enable drummers to find an
incredible range of sound within the drum.
Martial Arts
Learn and practice ancient forms of self-defense and discover why they
have stood the test of time. You will be introduced to basic strikes
and blocks from Japanese Karate and South Korean Taekwon-do. Practice
sparring and self-defense moves from both art forms in a
non-competitive setting.
Paper Mosaics
Study line and color through the timeless art of stained glass windows
and tile mosaics. Create your own geometric picture using “paper
mosaic” technique. Similar to tile mosaics, this art form involves
cutting and pasting recycled paper to create color segments, which are
pieced together onto a black base. The finished mosaics make
vibrantly-colored and durable wall hangings.
Puppetry Portal: Shadows of Time
Travel back to a magical, medieval time period when dragons, fairies,
and wizards ruled. Examples of art, architecture and mythology from
the Middle Ages will be used to inspire you to create your own 2D
kingdom of Shadow Puppets, complete with castles and characters of your
own design. You will also get to make your very own take-home Shadow
Puppet stage.
